Nelson Cavaliers had a mixed weekend in the TaffEly and Rhymney Valleys league with the firsts winning 2-0 at Hopkinstown in teh Premier League while the seconds lost 10-1 at home to Llantwit Fadre.

Nelson ended Hopkinstowns unbeaten league run with a solid display on a difficult surface on November 15.

The first half was a tight affair where the home team had the first decent effort but the ball smashed against the upright and bounced to safety.

Nelson capatalised by going ahead midway through the half. A long Lewis Roberts throw was flicked into the net by Dan Falconer.

Falconer had another chance minutes later but blazed wide and also had a goal disallowed for a challenge on the keeper.

The Cavs completely dominated the second half but were unable to make the game safe with a host of missed chances, goal line clearances and saves from the keeper keeping them out.

Despite this Cavs’ keeper Matthew Farr had a quiet half with only a half chance that was headed wide to deal with.

The decider didn’t come until the last minute when substitute Ben Banks lifted the ball over the keeper to put the points safe.

Back in Nelson it was different story despite thinking the seconds would would be chomping at the bit for a game after a long break, but within ten minutes you could see how wrong this was.

There was no energy, enthusiasm and lack of football seemed to hinder the performance.

Llantwit Fadre punished the lack of intensity, were relentless and found themselves 8-0 up at half time.

The effort second half was much better and Nelson didn’t concede the other two goals until late on.

Kenan James popped up with a goal for the cavaliers that was finished nicely.

It was obvious that the weeks of inactivity did not help Nelson but Llantwit were by far the better team on the day.

Hopefully Nelson can pick themselves up and produce better performances over the next few weeks.
