A design from a pupil at Heolddu Comprehensive School was chosen as the winning entry to the Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough’s Christmas card competition.

Nataleaha Willey won the Mayor’s competition to design the Civic Christmas card for this year, for which she received a supply of 50 cards for her own use and a £25 gift voucher.

The competition was open to pupils from Years 12 and 13 in Heolddu Comprehensive School and their challenge was to create their depiction of popular Bargoed statue ‘Miners Heads’.

The Mayor, Cllr David Carter, said: “The quality of entries within the competition was very high, but I finally chose Nataleaha’s image because of the fantastic level of skill demonstrated.”

I like the artwork and her depiction but it is not very Christmassy. I think Christmas cards should return to the days where they are focussed on traditional nativity scenes, Santa Claus, snowmen, or Christmas trees. We see here, like we see with cards handed out politicians, this obsession with trying to make something not remotely Christmassy, Christmassy.
