Four Caerphilly County Borough residents will receive the British Empire Medal after being named in The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Rita Evans, 76 of Abercarn, was honoured for voluntary service in the community in Caerphilly, having first volunteered at Abercarn nursery nearly 50 years ago.

She has since given her time to the Citizen’s Advice Bureau, and is chair of the Newbridge and District Cancer Research Committee, having been a member for 15 years.

The composer and musical director of Aber Valley Male Voice Choir, Geraint Evans, is to be given the medal for services to music and charity, while Thomas Lewis of Risca will be honoured for services to music and the community.

Oakdale resident David Curtis will receive the medal for voluntary and charitable service to the community in Caerphilly.

The Secretary of State for Wales congratulated those across the country who were honoured.

Stephen Crabb MP said: “One of the great things about Her Majesty’s New Year’s Honours list is that people from many different backgrounds are honoured in the same way.

“Those who work quietly and diligently for their communities often receive the same recognition as those who achieve great things in sport, the arts or through public service.

“I am very proud of all the hard-working people in Wales who have been honoured and want to thank them all for contributing so much to Wales.”
