Rugby Union: Bargoed unstoppable against Pontypool with thirteenth bonus point win

Sport | | Published: 13:00, Thursday January 8th, 2015.

Bargoed kicked off the New Year where the last one ended, with a bonus point win in the SWALEC Championship on January 3.

The 39-7 victory at Pontypool means Bargoed are undefeated in the league with 14 wins from 14.

Bargoed took the lead from two Josh Prosser penalties, but it was the home side who were first to cross the whitewash as a missed tackle allowed wing Chris Lang to run in under the posts.

Clayton Gullis converted and it looked like Bargoed would have to start the second- half a point behind.

All that changed quickly though with a yellow card shown to Pontypool scrum half Aaron Quick on 39 minutes after a 20 metre driving maul was brought down illegally.

Bargoed kicked to touch from the penalty and a clean catch and drive provided quick ball into midfield.

Hooker Leigh Meades found himself at scrum-half and moved the ball right and great hands from lock Darren Lynch put full-back Jordan Purcell in the corner.

Prosser’s conversion drifted wide and the half time whistle went with Bargoed in front at 7-11.

Bargoed piled on the pressure in the second-half and the scoreboard was soon ticking over as the forwards drove deep into the Pontypool twenty two.

Scrum-half James Pizey picked out number eight Geraint Edmunds at to crash over for the Blues’ second try. Prosser converted and Bargoed were 18-7 up with Quick still on the sidelines.

Restored to 15, Pontypool infringed on the line again. Two further penalties and two more scrums were called as the Blues pack turned the screw and eventually the referee went under the posts for a penalty try.

Pontypool tried to get something from the game and ran the ball across the backs, only for Darren Humphries to intercept and score the bonus point try under the posts.

Another scrum five metres out put the icing on the cake for the Bargoed pack with a second penalty try and an easy sixth successful kick for Prosser.

In the same league 12th placed Newbridge beat Tondu 17-11 on January 3 while 11th placed Blackwood were thrashed 86-0 by RGC in North Wales.

On January 17, Bargoed face RGC at home, while Newbridge travel to Narbeth and Blackwood entertain second placed Swansea.
