Ten tries including a Rory Budina hat-trick eased Bedwas to a 56-3 victory over Cardiff Met on February 21, to secure a place in the quarter finals of the Swalec Cup.
The students were first on the board with a penalty from the boot of outside-half Jacob Chilcott after Bedwas were caught offside.
Shortly afterwards Tom Maynard had a similar shot at goal after the visitors were also adjudged offside but his chance went wide.
Bedwas regrouped and after winning a scrum the ball was moved quickly across the line for Rory Budina to cross out wide. Maynard’s difficult kick went narrowly wide.
Five minutes later hooker Alun Rees doubled the home advantage and Maynard successfully converted.
Arron Pinches made a superb 70 metre break but what could have been a try scoring pass was judged forward and the chance went begging.
Bedwas looked to increase the lead and got their reward when hard working debutant flanker George Lee crossed for an unconverted try.
Stuart Thomas ran in the fourth, again unconverted, as Bedwas increased the pressure to lead 22 points to 3 at the break.
Dan Crimmins and Rory Budina added tries. the latter converted by Maynard to effectively seal the game with only 15 second-half minutes gone.
Bedwas made several substitutions but managed to keep up the momentum and Tom Rowlands crossed under the posts, converted by Maynard, and shortly afterwards James Sawyer crashed through for an unconverted try.
Budina’s break ended just before the line but a simple pass out of the tackle allowed Mathew John to add to the scoring.
Two minutes later a good run from deep by Budina bought his hat-trick try and Bedwas’ tenth and safe passage to the next round of the cup.
Cross Keys are also through to the quarter-finals after beating RGC 1404 47-14 in North Wales.
Next weekend Bedwas play Newport at Rodney Parade, kick off is at 1.30pm on February 28, while Cross Keys travel to Llanelli for a 2.30pm kick off.
