Bargoed beat Swansea 21-18 in a hard-fought encounter at a blustery Bargoed Park on March 28, making it a remarkable twentieth consecutive victory in the Swalec Championship.
The second-placed Whites made it difficult for the league leaders and it took a brave call from centre Neil Burnett to orchestrate a fantastic last minute drop goal to seal the win for the Blues.
Swansea, playing with the wind, raced to a nine nil lead by the end of the first quarter from the boot of fullback Nicky Thomas.
Bargoed struck back just before the half hour when open-side flanker Grant Rogers showed a great turn of speed to run in from 30 metres and score in the corner.
Prosser’s conversion drifted wide against the wind as Bargoed closed the gap to 5-9.
Bargoed failed to gather the restart and Swansea had a scrum inside the Blues’ twenty two. Referee Neil Hennessy awarded the Whites a penalty and Thomas slotted over his fourth of the half to make it 5-12 after 32 minutes.
Swansea flanker Matthew David was shown a yellow card for a ruck infringement as Bargoed piled on the pressure.
But, the Blues couldn’t convert the pressure into points and the half ended with the Whites still in front at 5-12.
Bargoed, buoyed by their strong finish to the first-half, looked the stronger from the start of the second-half but it was the away side who scored first with yet another Thomas penalty to open up a ten point lead on 52 minutes.
A collective groan met Darren Humphries’ knock-on as the Blues looked certain to score their second try of the afternoon. The disappointment was soon erased when Humphries crashed through the midfield at pace and went over under the posts. Prosser converted to make it 12-15 with 56 minutes gone.
Prosser levelled it at 15-all from a penalty with 12 minutes left. Bargoed took the lead for the first time on 72 minutes with Prosser’s second penalty.
The lead was short-lived as Nicky Thomas rounded off an impressive afternoon with the boot making it six from six as Swansea chose to settle for the draw.
Bargoed had no such qualms and with the score 18 apiece, chased down the restart, claimed it and the forwards drove through the midfield and up to the Swansea twenty two.
Centre Neil Burnett dropped back into the outside-half spot and replacement scrum-half Craig Wilson, who fed him to drop a fabulous goal from 40 metres and put theBlues ahead at 21-18.
There was time for a restart and the home crowd had a nervous wait before Bargoed were given a penalty that was dispatched into touch to end a memorable game.
