Rugby Union: Bedwas get bonus point in win at Ebbw Vale

Bedwas beat  Ebbw Vale 20-34 on April 4 despite playing thirty minutes with only 14 men due to three sin-binnings.

The Principality Premiership match started at a frantic pace and Ebbw were ahead very early via a try from Rhys Downe. Iain Smerdon added the conversion.

The Bedwas response was fast and incisive. Mathew John broke through several tackles and set Arron Pinches away at pace who passed onto the supporting Lewis Hudd to cross for a try. Richard Powell confidently added the conversion.

Less than five minutes later a good flowing move put Mike Callow over for Bedwas’ second try, again well converted by Powell who added a penalty goal after sixteen minutes to put his side ten points ahead.

Ebbw fought hard to get back into the game but the Bedwas defence stood firm and all the hosts could muster was a penalty from Adam Jones.

Just before the half hour mark Bedwas flanker James Sawyer was yellow carded for a ruck offence but the team dug in and did not allow Ebbw any scoring opportunities.

Shortly before half-time Powell had mixed fortunes with penalty attempts, narrowly missing one before being successful with his second.

There was still time for Bedwas indiscipline to implode again, this time Mike Callow was yellow carded, punished by a successful penalty from Adam Jones. Half-time followed with Bedwas 20 points to 13 ahead.

Starting the second half with an extra man Ebbw battled hard to get back into the game but the Bedwas defence was in no mood to surrender.

Harley Thomson was denied a try after a forward pass was called, but shrugged of his disappointment to score a try to the right of the posts, again converted by Powell.

Once again Bedwas incurred the wrath of the referee and were down to fourteen men for ten minutes with a quarter of the game left, captain Phill Rees this time adjudged the guilty party.

The one man advantage in the scrum eventually told and after two scrums  folded the referee awarded the home side a penalty try. Adam Jones added the conversion to reduce the arrears to seven points.

Bedwas continued to battle hard and Richard Wilkes crossed from close range to earn the four try bonus point. Powell added the extras to take his personal points tally for the day to fourteen.

The home side threw everything at the Bedwas defence to try and salvage something from the game but Bedwas were not going to be denied a deserved win and dug deep to keep their hosts out.

The win moves Bedwas up to fourth in the league table and still in with a chance of making the play-offs. With next week being a free weekend Bedwas can rest and prepare for what will be a huge home match against Cardiff on Saturday April 18, kick off 2.30pm.
