Risca United Academy under 12s have been crowned FAW Academy Cup winners in their first season as club.

The academy, made up of the former Caerphilly School FC and Risca United, beat northern champions Bala Town 5-1 in the final.

Risca dominated the game after being crowned southern champions, with  victories against Port Talbot Town and Cambrian and Clydach.

They secured the final win with goals from  Ethan Edwards, Leon Thomas, Alex Newman Jones, Morgan Evans and Drew Davies.

The club are based as the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach and provide representative football in both Welsh Schools and FAW Academy competitions for junior footballers across the Caerphilly County Borough.

The head of the academy, Robert Bailey, said: “We are very proud to have achieved FAW Academy status that allows players from Caerphilly County Borough to compete at the highest level of junior football outside of professional clubs.

“To be crowned FAW Academy Cup winners ever is something to be proud of, but to do so in our first season really is the stuff of dreams and something the players will carry with them for ever.”

The FAW’s Andrew Howard said: “Becoming the Welsh Academy Under 12 Champions is a fantastic achievement for Risca in their first season of academy football.

“I have been extremely impressed by the standards of the academy from day one and the hardworking volunteers should be commended for that.

“The outstanding facilities, excellent coaching and strong games programme will ensure that the academy goes from strength to strength, the most significant outcome being better players for the club, the community and Wales.”
