Rugby League: Aber Valley Wolves stay second with win against Cardiff

Sport | | Published: 16:01, Friday July 3rd, 2015.

Aber Valley Wolves consolidated their second placed position in the Welsh Conference with a hard fought 20-10 win at Senghenydd RFC against Cardiff City RL on July 1.

In a generallyclean battle, save for a second half Cardiff sin-bin that finally swung the match, the Wolves showed their grit and a few good moments of skill to claim the points.

The visitors started well as Matt Williams gave Cardiff the lead on 13 minutes. The conversion was sliced wide.

And that was how it remained until just before the interval in this defensive half when some strong attacking play saw Greg Williams weave through to level with James Hallett adding the goal to give the Wolves a two-point lead.

It took less than five minutes after the break for Wolves to add to their lead with an unconverted Darryl Skym try and, following Dan Hiscock’s yellow card, Ross Lewis added their third try to make the score 14-4.

Four minutes later Aber Valley made use of their extra man as a fine run from Gareth Hutchinson left the defence for dead, and he utilised the gap to place the ball under the sticks. Hallett’s conversion made the score 20-4.

Cardiff got a consolation try three minutes from the end, when Chris True set up Sam Herron to score.

Andrew Prouse converted, but Wolves’ strong defence prevented another score.
