A new survey has revealed that Brits prefer to bury their heads in the sand, rather than check their bank balances, with half of the country saying they are surprised by the amount of money in their account when they do check it.

However, it seems we are also a nation of pessimists, with three quarters of those who are often surprised finding more in their accounts than they were expecting.

Despite this, with the advent of banking on-the-move, it seems that checking our balance is becoming a serious priority.

The survey, conducted by Nationwide Building Society, which launched the first smartwatch banking app in the UK last year, highlighted that people were more likely to check their account balance (44%) than their work email (34%) or update their diary (34%) while on-the-move. Three quarters (75%) of those surprised by their account balances had more in their accounts than they were expecting and over 44% of Brits check their bank balance on their smartphone while on-the-move.

Nationwide Building Society has released one of the first banking apps for the Apple Watch in the UK, enabling customers to check their real-time account balance at a glance, wherever they are.

To win £100 of John Lewis vouchers to treat yourself with, simply answer the following question:
Which of the following are people more likely to do on their mobile?

a) Check their work e-mail
b) Check their bank balance
c) Update their diary
