Caerphilly rider Manon Carpenter has climbed to second in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup downhill series, after claiming two seconds in North America.

Carpenter won second place in Mont-Sainte-Anne in Canada, beaten by fellow Briton Rachel Atherton on August 1 and repeated her success a week later in Windham, USA.

The Madison Saracen rider has admitted to having a tough season, but was thrilled to build on her second place in the Switzerland stage.

On Instagram she said: “Leaving USA and Canada with two seconds and now second place overall heading into Val di Sole.

“Happy to be moving on up after the first half of the season.”

Speaking to BBC Radio Wales a few days before the Canada stage, she said: “I think I’m getting back to where I’d like to be.”

There is just one stage left in the world cup series, on August 22 to 23 at Val di Sole in Italy.

Carpenter won both the UCI World Cup Series and the UCI World Championships last year.

Carpenter can’t beat Rachel Atherton, who secured the World Cup title by winning in Wyndham, but another good performance in Italy will boost her confidence ahead of the World Championships.

This year’s World Championships take place at Vallnord in Andorra between August 31 and September 6.
