Bargoed beat Cardiff Met 38-20 in the SSE Swalec Championship on September 19, coming from behind to win their first game of the season.
Bargoed put in an outstanding second half display to beat the students at the University Playing Fields, running in six tries to three.
Lewis Wayman was unlucky not to be on the score sheet as early as the third minute, just knocking on over the line following a storming run by second row Nicky Coughlin.
Bargoed were reduced to fourteen after just six minutes with centre Darren Humphries adjudged to have put in a dangerous tackle.
Cardiff Met took full advantage and won clean line out ball from the kick to touch before moving it quickly to centre Robin Guest to go over for the first score. George Simpson converted.
The students went further ahead in the 25th minute with Simpson putting centre Chay Smith away to score in the corner for an unconverted try.
Try as they might Bargoed couldn’t get any continuity and fifty fifty decisions seemed not to be going their way.
Worse was to come for Bargoed as Simpson added a penalty and with 38 minutes gone James Pizey let his frustration show and was sin-binned.
With students lying on the wrong side of a ruck he was shown a yellow card by referee Justin Williams for use of the boot.
However, with the last move of the first half Bargoed got onto the scoresheet with prop Rhys Morgan going over from close range. Stephen Lang added the conversion to make it a more comfortable 15-7 scoreline.
The second half could not have been more different. From the off, the Blues’ forwards were dominant although they lost outside half Lang with an injury two minutes after half time and scrum half Mathew Hutcheon took over out of position at ten.
Number eight Ross Coombes went over in the corner but the touch judge’s flag went up. B
argoed forced a knock on from the line out and applied enormous pressure with flanker Andrew Coupe going over from the fourth successive scrum to make it 15-12 after 49 minutes. Stand in kicker Lee Pearson’s conversion went wide.
A much more disciplined performance was paying off for the Blues and with the forwards showing great patience flanker Lewis Wayman forced his way over at pace on a great angle. Bargoed were in front for the first time in the game at 15-17 after 55 minutes but could not extend the lead with the conversion.
The bonus point try came just five minutes later. A Cardiff Met scrum ten metres out was disrupted and Bargoed turned over possession.
Coombes drove, dummied to go over but slipped the ball to Lee Pearson on the wing who ran around to make the conversion easier. Centre Phil Price took over the kicking duties and stretched the lead with the extras to 15-24.
Second row Rhys Verney came off the bench and made a significant impact. He took a restart, made ground and set up quick ball which got to centre Darren Humphries and he ran in from 40 metres. Price again converted to make it 15-31 in the 64th minute.
With the pack dominant, the Bagoed eight put the icing on the cake with a 76th minute penalty try from a five metre scrum which Price again converted.
The students got a late injury time consolation try from full back Oli Glasse to make the final score 20-38.
