Mynydd Meio Common in Abertridwr is being sold at auction and could fetch around £30,000.

The common, which is 284 acres in size, is being sold by current owners Llanfair Court Investments Ltd, which according to Companies House, is owned by the Crawshay family of Abergavenny.

Matt Tyler, Head of Property Auctions at Seel and Co, said: “Our client owns a number of commons and they are looking to dispose of it.

“They have disposed of common land previously and this common is the next one.”

He added: “Of course with common land there are commoners’ rights, but there is a potential use for renewable energy, subject to all the necessary consent requirements.”

At a guide price of £100 an acre, the land measuring 284 acres, could go for around £30,000, but Mr Tyler said it can be quite difficult to estimate its value before an auction.

He explained: “We have sold smaller common land cheaper, but this type of lot is always popular.

“In March last year we sold Bedwellty Common, measuring 11,000 acres, at £75 an acre.

“There may be some long-term investment having the mineral rights or the potential to shot game on the land. It all really depends on the person and what consents are required from various stakeholders.”

The auction of Mynydd Meio is taking place on Tuesday, October 20, at 5pm by Seel and Co at the Park Inn Hotel in Cardiff.

Although referred to locally as a mountain, the land is 322 metres high – well short of the UK Government’s official mountain mark of 600m.
