Your guide to hiring local contractors

Sponsored Content | | Published: 16:06, Monday December 14th, 2015.

Any business, large or small, needs to be certain of the quality of a local contractor when they are needed for a job. Whether your business is seeking a local builder or a local professional in an area such as transport, health care, or information technology, it is important that you find the right contractor to do the job properly. A mistake can be costly, so it is important to hire right the first time.

What to keep in mind when hiring contractors
To ensure that the quality of a local contractor is up to standard, there are a number of things that you can do to ensure you are making the right choice. As with seeking a full-time employee, looking at an individual’s CV or résumé can be an important first step in making sure that a contractor has the right experience and qualifications for your needs. Similarly, following this up with a personal interview can help you get to know the person or company and to find out in more detail whether they are likely to meet your requirements. However, these steps can eat up a lot of time and expense.

Some tips on hiring contractors
To save time, it can be helpful from the outset to focus on how a local contractor fulfils the specific needs that you have for the particular job that you have in mind. An experienced contractor, for example, should be able to provide a tailored portfolio of professional references and previous work projects in the area of expertise that you are seeking. This is as equally true of health care professionals as of IT technicians or builders, so finding out about past contracts and their success can help you to build a complete picture of an individual contractor’s reputation in the industry. In this way, you can also find out more about their ways of working and any areas of weakness.

How umbrella companies can help
One thing to consider is to let someone else do the filtering of candidates for you. An umbrella company, for example, is likely to have contacts across industries and a wide range of entrepreneurs, contractors, and self-employed individuals to draw upon in finding the right person for your job. The umbrella company can then help to draw up a short-list of suitable resources for you to consider. Furthermore, by working through an umbrella company, you can specify practicalities, such as pay scale and contract hours, at the start and include them among your search criteria, rather than negotiating directly with each candidate for the job.

In conclusion: an umbrella company helps with hires
When you don’t have the time to spend on a complex recruitment campaign but need a specialist job done quickly, an umbrella company can get you in touch with the skills that you need. Short-listed candidates come pre-screened and can be selected according to a variety of criteria of your choosing. The administration of contracts is also less of a burden, as the umbrella company can act as an intermediary in legal matters. In short, an umbrella company can help find a contractor that works for you.

  • A new health board initiative is changing the way menopause care is delivered in GP surgeries across Gwent. The Menopause Champions Project, introduced in June this year by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, aims to give patients going through menopause better access to informed and consistent support from their local practice teams. The scheme was developed by Dr Jayne Forrester-Paton, a menopause and sexual and reproductive health specialist, alongside Dr Michelle Olver, clinical lead of the menopause team, and nurse consultant Nikki Noble. Together, they set out to equip GPs and practice nurses with up-to-date knowledge and practical tools to improve care. So far, 41 GP practices in the region now have a trained “Menopause Champion” — a clinician who can provide advice and guidance on both hormonal and non-hormonal treatment options. These champions are backed by a network of colleagues and specialists to help them stay confident in managing more complex cases. Dr Forrester-Paton said the project had already made a strong start and would continue to grow: “We are proud of how successful this project has been so far and will continue to grow, with plans to expand educational sessions for clinicians, offer virtual case discussions to improve care for complex menopause cases and strengthen the collaboration between primary care and specialist menopause services. “The Menopause Champions Project is helping to ensure that menopause is treated with the same care and attention as any other health issue, giving patients the support they need, when they need it.”
