News | | Published: 13:30, Monday December 21st, 2015.

An appeal to get heart defibrillators installed in public buildings in Caerphilly County Borough has donated one of the lifesaving devices to Caerphilly Castle.

Tommy’s Ticker Appeal was started by the Caerphilly town based Tommy Cooper Society, together with charity Welsh Hearts, and has so far managed to raise enough money to get the equipment installed at Caerphilly Library, the Visit Caerphilly Centre, Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall, Blackwood Miners’ Institute, Rudry Parish Hall and Bedwas Workmen’s Hall.

Tudor Jones, Chairman of the Tommy Cooper Society, said: “Caerphilly Castle is the seventh defibrillator installed in the Caerphilly County Borough area through our campaign and we are most grateful to Welsh Hearts, the Welsh Ambulance Service, and our other supporters in helping us encourage the installation of these lifesaving units.”

Caerphilly-born magician Tommy Cooper suffered a heart attack live on national television in 1984 while performing at Her Majesty’s Theatre in London.

The society established in the comedian’s name successfully raised several thousand pounds for a statue of the fez wearer. in the town centre. The bronze sculpture was unveiled in 2008 by actor Sir Anthony Hopkins.
