The former Lansbury Park Community Centre is set to be demolished after Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet approved proposals.
The building on the Caerphilly town estate was being used as a storage facility for Caerphilly County Borough Council.
The dilapidated building was highlighted as an eyesore by the community in discussions on improvements to the area.
The demolition will happen as part of a £200 million council project to upgrade all council properties up to the Welsh Housing Quality Standard by 2020.
Around £12m of that will be spent on the Lansbury Park estate.
Cllr Barbara Jones, Deputy Leader of Council and local ward member, said: “The community centre has been disused for over 25 years and has become an eyesore in the heart of the estate.
“Demolition is the best way forward so that we can then consult with the community and agree the best use of the site in the future.”
I support demolishing old buildings but do not provide money for a new one. Turn the plot into parking spaces or a garden. The money could be better spent, or even better, not spent. Aim for a surplus!
There would be no point in wasting money building a new community centre if it’s not going to be used, we have a village hall where I live which sits empty for 99% of the time, there seems no point in the council wasting money to keep it open, it may as well knock it down and stick a few houses there or sell it to somebody who will actually make use of it. There must be many council owned buildings in Caerphilly that aren’t being used and are simply a waste of money and resources.
