Council tax scam warning

News | | Published: 17:00, Thursday January 21st, 2016.

Residents are being urged to be vigilant against a council tax scam currently doing the rounds.

Caerphilly County Borough Council said it has been contacted by several residents after they received a phone call purporting to be from the council.

The caller claimed that the resident was due a refund of council tax and requested bank details so that payment could be made.

In another case, a resident received a text message from ‘HTT.gov.uk’ which asked for a form to be completed as the council owed the resident money.

No residents fell for the scams and contacted the council.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Public Protection, said: “These phone calls and messages are in no way associated with this council.

“We would certainly never ask for bank details by text message and I would like to thank our residents for bringing this to our attention so that we can make other residents aware.

“To avoid being duped by this type of fraudulent activity, always remember the golden rule – never give bank or personal details to anyone that you do not know or trust, and if in any doubt please get in touch with our Trading Standards team for advice.”

• To report an issue to the council’s Trading Standards team, call 01495 235 291 or visit www.caerphilly.gov.uk/tradingstandards.
