Caerphilly-based housing association United Welsh has raised £3,362 for LATCH, the Welsh Children’s Cancer Charity.
Staff at United Welsh voted to make LATCH the company’s corporate charity for 2015 following the support they gave to colleague Gill Hopkins’ family, whose grandson was receiving treatment for cancer.
Gill Hopkins, Customer Services Advisor for United Welsh said: “When my grandson Sam was diagnosed he spent a lot of time at the Children’s Hospital in Cardiff.
“LATCH funds social workers, accommodation in hospital, and just help when you don’t know where to turn and you don’t know where to start.
“My colleagues at United Welsh have been so supportive, willing to take their own time and dig into their own pockets for something when there are so many worthy causes.”
LATCH supports children, and their families, being treated by the oncology unit at the Children’s Hospital for Wales.
Around 70 new cases are diagnosed every year.
Gill added: “Sam will be two at the end of January and hopefully his health problems are behind him, but we will never forget the support we had from LATCH, or the other children and their families who have not been as fortunate as us.”
Some of this year’s fundraising efforts have included raffles, cake sales and sports day races.
Mark Snelgrove, Senior Customer Services Advisor for United Welsh also climbed Pen Y Fan every day after work for five nights to raise money.
Denise Henderson, General Manager for LATCH said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to the team at United Welsh for their fantastic year of fundraising for LATCH.
“Running LATCH is very much a group effort, and without the support of organisations like United Welsh we wouldn’t be able to sustain our services to support children and families at a time when their lives are turned upside down.”
United Welsh staff have nominated the Alzheimer’s Society as their 2016 Charity of the Year.
