Villagers fed-up with speeding traffic through country lanes have been issued with their own speed gun to deter drivers from exceeding the limit.
Around 26 residents in Rudry, Waterloo and Draethen have volunteered to catch speeding motorists, although drivers will be sent a warning letter rather than a fine.
Part of the initiative Community Speed Watch, funding for the handheld speed trap has come from Gwent’s Police and Crime Commissioner.
Sergeant Sarah Greening said speeding in the area is a local priority.

I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve followed somebody along the A468 from Newport driving at 40mph through the 60mph zone only for them to go sailing past the 30mph signs into Machen still doing 40mph – totally oblivious to the speed limit and everything around them. The 30mph stretch through Machen is less than a mile long and takes less then 2 minutes so why is it so difficult for drivers to drive within the 30mph speed limit, anybody who is caught speeding only has themselves to blame.
