Vehicle specialists Vantastec, based in Ystrad Mynach, is looking to double its annual £9 million turnover within the next two years.

The firm, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this month, is looking at expansion by introducing a range of new products and services in addition to its traditional core offering.

Founded by directors Gareth Edwards, 38, and Colin Smith, 54, the pair began their working partnership at a local branch of US refrigerated vehicle company Thermo King.

Mr Edwards said he was working more than 100 hours a week as a service manager at the company, when he decided the time was right to strike out on his own.

He said: “Colin used to be my boss and when I decided to do it he said ‘I’m also looking for a change’, so we both jumped into it together really.”

Vantastec was formed and early meetings were around Mr Edwards’ kitchen table – much to the consternation of his wife.

Within 12 months of selling its first temperature-controlled vehicle, the company had moved into its own unit at Penallta Industrial Estate and was soon concentrating on growth.

Ten years on and the company, now based in a 60,000 sq ft industrial unit on Caerphilly Road, Ystrad Mynach, has a turnover of £9m and employs 45 staff.

Customers range from national catering firms to local authorities and the company now has commercial relationships with all major dealers, allowing it to provide any make and model of van – and not just temperature-controlled.

All of their bespoke van conversions are carried out in-house.

Recent demand for its bespoke van fitting service has come from local companies and it is this area where the company sees potential for growth.
