An annual council-run campaign for volunteers to run community clean-ups has returned.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Big Spring Clean wants people to get together with council staff to organise litter picks and community planting projects.
Hundreds of volunteers joined forces with the council last year and collected more than 40 tonnes of litter and waste.
So far this year, a large number of organisations have already signed up to get involved – including McDonalds in Blackwood and Newbridge, Rhymney Community Education Group, Asda in Blackwood, Morrisons in Bargoed and Cwm Glas Infants School in Llanbradach.
Key partners including Keep Wales Tidy, Groundwork, United Welsh, Space Saviours, Fly Tipping Action Wales and Natural Resources Wales will also be involved in the Big Spring Clean.
Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member for Community and Leisure Services said: “Each year the Big Spring Clean continues to grow.
“It’s fantastic to see that so many people care about the appearance of their communities and are determined to make Caerphilly County Borough an even greener place to live, work and visit.
“I look forward to seeing some brilliant projects over the coming months and the results of the hard work of volunteers throughout the county borough.”
Residents who would like to get involved in a community clean-up, or who would like to organise one, can call 01443 873 758 for more information. The council can supply litter pickers and waste bags for use during the clean-up.
It is unfortunate this needs to go ahead. If some people in Caerphilly had respect and did not drop litter, this would not be needed.
I admire this scheme though. The council, in the face of money wasting, is choosing to get the local people to volunteer to do the job the council should be doing.
