A gardening and wildlife project run by Caerphilly County Borough Council has been given a national recycling award.

The Windy Ridge project, which teaches horticultural and wildlife awareness in the community, was recognised for its work with drinks can recycling programme Every Can Counts.

Enough money has been raised through the programme to fund an educational gardening trip for its service users to enjoy.

Lisa Rees, community support worker at Windy Ridge Gardening and Wildlife project, said: “Winning a Green Can Award is an amazing accolade for the project.

“The number of cans we collect has grown considerably. Starting with three collection points we now collect from over eight different sources within Caerphilly County Borough.

“The project has proved to be a great success giving the people at Windy Ridge the opportunity to experience a community enterprise whilst also making a difference to the environment.”

Monies collected from the recycling will be put towards funding an educational gardening trip.
