Three people were taken to hospital after a bus and a 4×4 Ford Ranger car crashed head-on in Machen.

The crash, which also involved two other vehicles, happened on Commercial Street at around 8.15pm on Sunday, April 10.

The 36-year-old bus driver, from Pontypool, is reported to have received back and neck injuries and was cut free from his vehicle by rescuers using hydraulic equipment.

A spokeswoman for the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8.15pm on Sunday April 10 to reports of a road traffic collision involving a bus and three other vehicles on Commercial Road, Machen.

“We responded with three rapid response vehicles, two emergency ambulances, two basics doctors, one hazardous area response team vehicle and one special operations response team vehicle.

“Three casualties were conveyed to the Royal Gwent Hospital with what are believed to be non life-threatening injuries.”

That main road is so dangerous. I can’t believe there hasn’t been more accidents with the way cars speed through the village. Traffic slowing methods should be put in place before someone dies instead of waiting until someone does

Machen Community Speed Watch has recently started to monitor the speed of vehicles travelling through Machen, although it is not the road that is dangerous, the danger comes from those behind the wheel of the vehicle that they are driving, if people are paying attention, are driving within the speed limit and are also taking into consideration the weather conditions and road surface then there would be far less folk crashing into innocent passers by. The speed limit of 30mph is sufficient for the road through Machen, it is after all a major trunk road which connects Newport to Caerphilly. I dare say that this crash had nothing to do with speed and more to do with the fact that somebody was driving like a fool and not paying attention which is normally the case. As a Machen resident I have walked alongside the A468 through Machen many times and don’t think speeding vehicles are too bad of an issue, yes sure there are drivers who do break the limit but generally most vehicles aren’t travelling above 30mph, illegally parked cars are more of an issue along commercial road. As well as the community speed watch there are regular Police speed checks at either end of Machen. We can all do our bit for road safety by checking our own speed the next time we are driving through a built up area.

Obviously it’s the cars/drivers that are dangerous. The road also has a few bends and very few crossings. the speed limit is sufficient but I don’t see many people taking notice of it. I too walk the road every day to take my child to school.

yes I agree, there are drivers who totally disregard the speed limit. I Was driving through Machen one evening, 9 March and was overtaken going up the small hill in the village by a recovery truck carrying a FC Brooks and sons of Caerphilly truck. I uploaded the video caught on my dash camera to you tube. I was obviously not going fast enough for the driver of this vehicle.
