Counterfeiter from Penybryn ordered to pay £1,350 for selling copied DVDs and CDs

News | | Published: 15:00, Thursday May 12th, 2016.

A CD and DVD counterfeiter has been handed an eight-week suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay almost £1,350.

Gareth David Parker, 39, of Trosnant Crescent, Penybryn, pleaded guilty to six charges under the Trade Marks Act 1994 and the Copyright Designs and Patents Act 1988, when the case was heard at Newport Magistrates’ Court on April 29.

Parker was prosecuted by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Trading Standards after it received information that he was copying music and films onto disks and selling them online.

Investigations led Trading Standards to Parker’s home, where a warrant was executed and evidence seized which proved he was dealing in counterfeit goods.

The court heard how Parker also had similar previous convictions, dating from January 2013, and sentenced him to eight weeks imprisonment, suspended for 12 months and ordered him to carry out 120 hours unpaid work.

Parker was also ordered to pay costs to the council of £1,268 and a £80 victim surcharge.

Cllr Nigel George, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Public Protection, said: “Counterfeiting is a serious crime which can have a significant impact on our communities, and our Trading Standards team work extremely hard to tackle the sale and supply of counterfeit items.”
