A hiking event has been hailed a success after more than 550 people took part.

The 2016 Caerphilly Challenge Series saw 557 entrants of all abilities take part on various walking routes throughout the day.

Held on Saturday, May 7, the annual event this year attracted walkers from the other side of the River Severn, Ireland and even France.

Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development: “I am delighted that the Challenge Series has once again been a huge success.

“Well done to each and every person who entered this fantastic challenge.

“I look forward to seeing you all here again next year.”

This year’s Challenge Series offered a range of routes suitable for beginners, more experienced hikers and runners. ‘The Forge’ 22-mile and 17-mile routes were available to those handy with a map, while an 11-mile led-walk was available for those not so handy.

Shorter walks of between one and five miles were also held.

The Caerphilly Challenge Series was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s countryside service, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, Let’s Walk Cymru, Caerphilly Adventure Group, Islwyn Ramblers, Caerphilly Ramblers, the Penallta Strollers and the Pengam Strollers.

It was a good day out, I had fun as always. The 17 mile route I chose felt more like 20 miles though. Maybe they got it wrong or maybe I am getting older!

I did it years ago and came in last. Took me two days to recover, never again.

Yes, the longer walks are tough going and many can’t finish. Don’t give up though, the short walks are better suited to the occasional walker. Doing a 5 miler is still good for the body and soul as well as being fun.
