Year five and six pupils at Tyn Y Wern Primary School have opened their very own Museum of Trethomas.
As part of an extra-curricular club, the pupils have been busy researching and collecting information for the project.
The exhibits focus on four main categories – the First World War, the Second World War, the local Colliery, and the history of Tyn Y Wern Primary School.
Pupils adopted the roles of tour guides, and led the visiting public through the museum, showing the various artefacts and historical school photos on display.
After the success of last year’s project at Bedwas Workmen’s Hall, the school has decided to enter the Welsh Heritage Awards competition for another year.
The competition, run by the Welsh Heritage School Initiative, aims to encourage young people in school to take more interest in their heritage within their communities.
Caroline ap Hywel, History Co-ordinator said: “The museum project has really inspired the children and given them a holistic learning experience reaching far beyond the classroom.
“Not only have they significantly enhanced their historical knowledge and understanding, they have also developed their literacy and numeracy skills within a rich real-life context.”
The children are hoping for their seventh consecutive win, with the awards announced in July at Swansea’s National Waterfront Museum.
