Poll suggests small businesses lack confidence in Welsh Government

News | | Published: 09:30, Friday June 3rd, 2016.

The new Welsh Government has a job on its hands to convince small businesses that it can deliver for them over the next five years, according to a snap poll.

The poll, conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses in Wales, asked respondents to rank how confident they were that the new Welsh Government will deliver for small businesses. On a scale of zero to 100, with zero being not at all confident and 100 being very confident, the average response came in at 36.

Respondents were asked about their key priorities for the new Welsh Government and two areas stood out.

A quarter (25%) wanted the new government to make a fairer business rates system a priority, while 22% wanted to see the creation of a single body to support small businesses.

Creating a more joined-up transport system was the third most popular choice among respondents, while simplifying and improving regulation and giving more local control over economic development were tied for the fourth spot.

FSB Wales Policy Unit Chair Janet Jones urged the new Welsh Government to make measures to assist in the success of Wales smaller firms key to its programme for government.

“Perhaps it comes as no surprise that creating a fairer business rates system comes so high on the agenda, as it is something that we have heard from so many of our member businesses with premises in recent years.”
