Running a half-marathon is no mean feat after months of training and preparation, but one mother-of-three has set herself the challenge of doing it deprived of her two main senses to raise money for a Caerphilly-based sensory charity.
Zoe Hamonda, from Llantwit Fadre, is aiming to raise £2000 for a sensory room at TouchBase Wales’ centre on Caerphilly Business Park by running the Cardiff Half-Marathon on Sunday October 2 wearing blackout goggles and ear defenders.
TouchBase Wales, which is run by national deafblind charity Sense Cymru, offers state-of-the-art services and facilities for young people and adults with sight and hearing impairments, and multiple disabilities.
The centre has been designed to provide a high quality environment that is fully accessible and can facilitate a wide range of social and learning activities.
Zoe, who describes herself as “most definitely not a natural runner”, will be accompanied by experienced runner and Sense Cymru worker, Gemma, who will help guide her around the 13.1 mile course.
In March, Zoe visited TouchBase Wales to practice being led around a simple obstacle course wearing a blindfold and ear defenders in preparation for the big day.
