Caerphilly MP Wayne David has publicly apologised for making a racially insensitive comment on BBC Radio Wales.

The Jason Mohammad Show, presented by Jamie Owen, was broadcast from Caerphilly town on Thursday, June 30, discussing the impact of the vote to leave the European Union.

When asked about the issue of immigration locally, Mr David said: “Well, in terms of numbers it’s not an issue.

“I mean, I think the only people who have coloured skin, if you like, are people who run takeaways.”

Mr David has since apologised for his remarks via Twitter.

He posted: “Ethnic minorities play a vitally important role in our society.

“Now more than ever, it is vitally important to combat racism in Caerphilly Borough and elsewhere.”

I apologise for any offence I may have caused for remarks on Radio yesterday. Ethnic minorities play a vitally important role in our society

I listened to this comment and thought it a strange thing to say. None of the foreign born people I currently work with and am friends with, incuding a Somali, a Turk, a Pakistani, a Portuguese, several Indians and a Polish person run takeways.

I’m glad Wayne has clarified this for me as I am a member of UKIP and not expected to understand these matters. Incidentally several of the foreign born people I work with voted ‘Leave’ in the referendum as they are well educated and know that control of our borders is essential, not racist and in their interests as workers in Britain. Pity the Labour party does not seem to get this.
