Caerphilly town’s Poundland store has raised more than £5,300 for Cancer Research Wales with its 5p carrier bag charge.

The funds have been raised over the last year by donating money raised via the statutory charge.

In total, around £75,000 has been raised by Poundland’s 27 Welsh stores for the charity.

Laura Priddle, Fundraising Manager at Cancer Research Wales said: “We are absolutely delighted with this donation from Poundland and so pleased to be chosen as their charity partner in Wales.

“Seemingly small donations of 5p add up very quickly to an amount that will make a huge difference to the fight against cancer here in Wales.”

It was a surprise for me to discover that it isn’t actually compulsory for retailers to give the money raised from the 5p bag tax to charity or good causes, this is a totally voluntary agreement that a retailer can sign up to if they wish. Well done to Poundland.
