Maesycwmmer Indian restaurant falls at final hurdle in MP’s Tiffin Cup

An Indian restaurant in Maesycwmmer has done Wales proud after representing the country in the grand final of the Tiffin Cup, which seeks to find the best South East Asian restaurant in the country.

The Spice Tree, on Thomas Street in Maesycwmmer, faced fierce competition from ten other South East Asian restaurants in the competition, held in the House of Commons.

Finalists were judged by the Tiffin Club of MPs and celebrity chef Ainsley Harriott. The Maesycwmmer restaurant had already been named the best Indian restaurant in Wales.

The Tiffin Cup was established by the Tiffin Club of MPs and is chaired by Keith Vaz MP.

Every year MPs from across the country are invited to nominate a South East Asian restaurant to compete for the honour of being named the best in the country. This year a total of 70 restaurants were nominated and the competition was won by Northampton’s Saffron restaurant.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans said: “The Spice Tree Indian has done not only Maesycwmmer but the whole of Wales proud by the excellent quality of the food they presented to judges last night. They were very worthy finalists and fantastic representatives for Wales.

“The competition in the Wales regional final was extremely stiff as well this year and the Spice Tree faced some truly exceptional restaurants from across Wales. I am delighted but not surprised that the Spice Tree was honoured as the best among them.

“Although they did not win and lift the cup in the grand final this year, I know the competition was very close indeed.”
