Caerphilly County Borough Council has said it will now lock a barrier to a car park at night to stop so-called boy racers from gathering.
Caerphilly Observer recently reported on how residents living near Blackwood Showfield were demanding action to stop antisocial behaviour at its car park.
Last year, Caerphilly County Borough Council cut the funding for a council worker to lock the gates of parks across the county borough – including the barrier at the Showfield car park, off Sunnybank Road.
Resident Niki Priest, 35, said the problem of car cruisers was affecting the community’s quality of life.
The mother-of-one said: “It’s just very disturbing. They come here at 11pm and the way in which they conduct their behaviour is irresponsible and dangerous.”
Since raising the issue with council officers, Blackwood’s Labour councillor Nigel Dix has been told the barrier will now be locked by community safety wardens each week night and will be unlocked by parks staff.
In addition, a CCTV camera will also be installed.
Cllr Dix welcomed the news and said: “I am pleased that the council are taking action to address the concerns of residents.
“Hopefully the new measures will help resolve antisocial behaviour and theft at the Showfield.
“This is a step in the right direction. However, I feel that the barrier should also be locked on weekends, as leaving the barrier open on weekends can leave the area vulnerable to vandals and thieves.
“The lead from the Blackwood Bowls Club pavilion roof was stolen recently over a weekend with council staff called out on a Sunday to repair the roof.
“In a time of continuing austerity and shrinking budgets we have to ensure that we protect our community assets.”
