Tommy Cooper Society pays tribute to late sculptor of Caerphilly town statue

The Tommy Cooper Society has paid tribute to artist James Robert Done – the man who sculpted the town’s statue of the Caerphilly-born entertainer.

Mr Done died in Cardiff, aged 76, and chairman of the Tommy Cooper Society, Tudor Jones MBE, called him “a great friend and supporter of the society.”

Along with the statue of the fez-wearing magician – which was unveiled in 2008 – James Done also created the life-size statue of bantamweight boxing champion Johnny Owen in Merthyr Tydfil in 2003.

He moved to Wales at an early age, having been born one of twelve children in Liverpool, and chose art over opportunities to become an opera singer.

Mr Jones said: “James’ latest work was a trophy which the Tommy Cooper Society will be presenting shortly to Bedwas Junior School and for which, with characteristic generosity, he refused a fee.

“His general presence will be greatly missed by members of the Society for whom his iconic statue will remain his lasting legacy.

“We send our love and sincere sympathy to his wife, Vivienne, and his family.”
