SUGAR DEAL: Pupils discuss their thoughts on a sugar tax with Caerphilly AM Hefin David

The school council of Nant Y Parc Primary recently visited the Welsh Assembly, where they debated and agreed the introduction of a ‘sugar tax’ on fizzy drinks.

The council, elected by their fellow classmates at the Senghenydd school, felt the tax would be the only way to protect against tooth decay and diseases like diabetes.

The young politicians met with Caerphilly AM Hefin David at the Senedd, who agreed he would write to the Welsh Health Minister on their behalf.

Dr David said: “It is clear the council made their decision after much discussion and thought. I have to say that politicians in Cardiff and Westminster could learn a lot from the friendly way in which they conducted their debate.”
