An investigation has been launched after a train caught fire at Caerphilly railway station, forcing evening commuters to be evacuated.

The Rail Accident Investigation Board is looking into the cause of the fire, believed to be electrical, following claims that smoke was seen coming from the Bargoed bound train when it was at Queen Street station in Cardiff.

Passengers were safely evacuated to Caerphilly station’s north platform with no injuries.

A spokesperson for Arriva Trains Wales said: “The incident is currently being investigated by the Rail Accident Investigation Board (RAIB).

“We regret the inconvenience caused to customers on the Rhymney line last night.”

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said it was called at around 5.26pm on Tuesday, October 4, with reports of a fire underneath a train. Crews from Caerphilly, Whitchurch, Pontypridd and Cardiff, attended and the fire was fully extinguished and safely cooled just before 8.50pm.

There was severe disruption to all Rhymney Valley services which lasted until around 9.40pm.
