Planning permission for new cemetery in Caerphilly gets approval

News | | Published: 10:15, Monday October 24th, 2016.

Planning permission for a new 3,800-plot cemetery near Caerphilly has been granted.

The 3,800-plot cemetery was given approval at a planning meeting on Wednesday, October 12, and looks set to be built on a site next to Old Nantgarw Road, in Groeswen.

The cemetery, which includes 2,000 burial spaces and 1,800 cremation plots, will serve residents living in the Aber Valley and Caerphilly town centre areas.

Concerns had been raised by councillors over the lack of pedestrian access to the site and poor public transport links.

In a report considered by councillors, Caerphilly County Borough Council said it was not justifiable on cost grounds to build a 700 metre footpath from Old Nantgarw Road given the expected low pedestrian demand.

It also said responsibility for Old Nantgarw road lay with neighbouring local authority Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Discussions with Stagecoach have also proved unsuccessful in trying to divert services to stop at the new cemetery with the bus operator believing there would be low demand.

The plans also include an office building, public toilets, a car park, a new access road and walking paths.
