Oakdale-based General Dynamics has successfully completed an initial firing test for its AJAX tank programme.

The defence firm, which has a £3.5 billion contract with the UK Government to develop and deliver the light-armoured vehicles, said the manned test was carried out at a range in Dorset last month.

The firing trials tested the performance of three weapons that can be mounted on the vehicle. This was the first manned firing test for an AJAX variant.

Kevin Connell, Vice President of General Dynamics Land Systems–UK, said: “These initial manned live firing trials are an important prerequisite to the other AJAX programme variant manned trials.

“Trials such as this demonstrate the step-change in capability that the AJAX family of armoured vehicles will provide to the British Army from our first delivery in 2017.”

In October last year, The Times reported that there had been problems with the tank’s firing system delaying the programme.

However, Defence Secretary Sir Michael Fallon subsequently insisted work on the weapons system for the AJAX was running on time and on budget.

In November, he told the Commons Defence Committee: “We believe AJAX is the best in class and the use of manoeuvre, and well-practised drills for example should reduce the threat of direct artillery fire.”

The full order of 589 tanks is due to be completed by 2024.
