Ynys Hywel Farm in Cwmfelinfach
A working farm in Cwmfelinfach is providing valuable educational experiences for children with additional learning needs.
Ynys Hywel Farm, which is owned by Caerphilly County Borough Council, provides farm-based activities for young primary school pupils and comprehensive schoolchildren with additional needs.
Activities include feeding livestock, sheep shearing and collecting eggs as well as conservation work such as tree planting, hedge laying and dry stone walling.
Sarah Williams, a teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, said: “A number of pupils from our school have visited the farm on a regular basis and have benefitted greatly from their experiences and developed many new skills.
“The staff at the farm are excellent role models for our pupils. Their patience, communication skills and understanding of the pupils’ needs are key to the success of the visits.”
