A stone plaque has been unveiled in honour of former Caerphilly MP Morgan Jones in his home town of Bargoed.
Jones was the Labour MP for Caerphilly between 1921 and 1939 and refused to fight in World War One, citing his socialist politics as to why he opposed the war.
After being imprisoned for his beliefs, he was the first conscientious objector to be elected to Parliament.
The stone plaque is a replacement for the bronze plaque which was stolen some years ago.
The plaque has been placed at the entrance to Bargoed Park at the top of Upper Wood Street by Caerphilly County Borough Council and was unveiled at midday on Friday, January 20 by Mayor and Bargoed councillor Dianne Price.
Caerphilly MP Wayne David, who is writing a biography of Morgan Jones, was at the unveiling, along with Morgan Jones’ daughter Margaret Sheaff, grandchildren Nick Sheaff and Claire Sheaff, and representatives from Bargoed Town Council including Mayor Cllr Tudor Davies.
As well as the first conscientious objector to be elected to Parliament, Jones, pictured above, was a Junior Education Minister in the Labour Governments of 1924 and 1929.
Caerphilly MP Mr David said: “Morgan Jones was a remarkable man who made a huge contribution to public life and the advance of democratic socialism.”
Cllr Dianne Price, Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council and ward member for Bargoed said: “It is an honour to unveil this plaque to celebrate the work and achievements of Morgan Jones.
“Born in Gelligaer and raised in Bargoed, his time spent studying and teaching in the Rhymney Valley led to a remarkable political career.”
