US President Donald Trump’s controversial ban on people travelling to the United States from seven mainly Muslim countries has drawn condemnation from South Wales East Assembly Member Mohammad Asghar.

The executive order, which was introduced on Saturday January 28, prevents people from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen entering the US for 90 days, and also halts all refugee admissions to the US.

Mr Asghar, who was born in Pakistan and has been in his Assembly role for ten years, said: “I am dismayed that President Trump has signed an Executive Order banning Muslims from seven Middle Eastern countries from travelling to the United States.

“This ban is totally divisive and unacceptable. It will only succeed in stirring up hate and fear of Muslims and exacerbate an already dangerous situation.

“Stigmatising people because of their nationality cannot be defended. Several federal judges have halted the deportation of visa holders believing the ban to be unconstitutional.

“I hope President Trump will reverse this damaging ban immediately.”
