Councillor accuses developer of “blackmailing” council over Oakdale Golf Club development

A councillor has accused a housing developer of “blackmailing” Caerphilly County Borough Council over plans to build 175 homes on a golf course.

Persimmon Homes originally had its application to build the development on land at Oakdale Golf Club turned down by councillors back in March last year.

It appealed and the hearing is set to take place in May.

Caerphilly County Borough Council’s planning committee has decided not to contest the appeal, which is being brought on the grounds that the council has withdrawn its latest draft Local Development Plan.

However, Penmaen councillor Roy Saralis has said that Persimmon is set to submit another planning application for the scheme ahead of the appeal.

Cllr Saralis said: “My angle on this is that it is blackmail. It’s ‘Either you agree on this, or we are going to stuff you with a pile of costs’.”

The Labour councillor has said he will be calling a public meeting on the issue to be held at Oakdale Community Centre at 10.30am on Saturday, March 4.

Persimmon Homes has been asked to comment.
