Rugby Union: East divisions round-up

Sport | | Published: 13:46, Friday March 17th, 2017.

As the season enters its final quarter, several teams from across Caerphilly County Borough are pushing for promotion, while others face a fight to stave off the drop.

In the WRU National Championship, Newbridge held on to beat Beddau 28-24 at the Welfare Ground.

It was a hairy finish to the match, after fourth-placed Beddau whittled down Newbridge’s 28-10 lead to get within touching distance of winning.

Risca and Nantyglo played out a high-octane match in Division 1 East, drawing 26-26 in a result which didn’t do much for either side’s aspirations.

Second-placed Nelson demolished Senghenydd 33-3 to leave Saints with the ignominy of remaining bottom of the division. Having played three games more than their closest league rival, things look precarious for Senghenydd in the race to avoid relegation.

Elsewhere, Penallta kept the pressure on the top two with a 47-15 victory over Brecon.

In Division 2 East, Ynyssdu bounced back from defeat to Pontypool United to beat Pill Harriers and open up a seven-point lead at the top of the table, as Blackwood moved into second place courtesy of a win at Talywain. Abertysswg are seemingly cut adrift at the foot of the table, with 20 points separating them from safety.

Fleur-de-Lys edged Monmouth 21-23 in Division 3 East A to put room between themselves and New Tredegar in 11th, while Oakdale’s match at Blackwood Stars was called off.

In Division 3 East B, Machen’s march to promotion continued as they extended their unbeaten streak to 16 games with a 34-7 victory over Crumlin. Aberbargoed maintained pressure on the leaders with a tight 21-22 win at Brynithel, but third-placed Hafodyrynys slipped up to Tredegar Ironsides, losing 7-13.

In Division 3 East C, Pontllanfraith sit bottom on -1, having been deducted points earlier in the season.
