Chief Constable of Gwent Police, Jeff Farrar, has offered a message of support and reassurance following the suspected terror attack in London yesterday, Wednesday March 22.

In a statement, Ch Con Farrar said: “It is with great sadness that we hear the tragic news of the death of PC Keith Palmer in yesterday’s terror attack in London. I would like to pass on my deepest condolences to his family and colleagues and to the families of the other victims involved in yesterday’s horrific attack.

“Police Officers are just ordinary people – ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, just as PC Keith Palmer has shown. We step forward to protect the public, when others step back. That is our job. However, incidents like those we saw yesterday in London, undoubtedly give us all an opportunity to reflect.

“My thoughts are with all the Emergency Services in London, who have shown such commitment and professionalism in the face of what has probably been one of the most challenging experiences of their careers.

“In Gwent, we are working closely with our partners to protect and reassure our communities. I cannot emphasise enough how much my officers appreciate the support you have shown us, on social media and in our neighbourhoods and it’s times like these when communities really come together and show their strength.

“Whilst there is no information to suggest that anything similar will happen in Gwent, please remember that the threat level, nationally, remains at ‘Severe’. If you notice anything that you consider unusual in your neighbourhood, no matter how small, please let us know by calling us on 101, or 999 if it is an emergency.

“If you are worried about friends or family involved in yesterday’s events, a helpline has been set up. You can call either 0800 056 0944 or 0207 158 0010, choosing option 1. Demand on these numbers will be high but please keep trying.

“Finally, during the next few days and weeks, you will see additional officers and CSOs in the community and at any events you may be attending. I hope you find this additional presence reassuring.”

Policing can’t stop it alone, parliament has to act with courage.
    That isn’t going to happen.

Hi Pete, guess your BNP/NF/Britain First friends are happy with this terrorist attack, excuses to preach about the evils of Islam, *yawns*, however, there’s nothing in Wales to attack. Fear mongering from the far-right tory elite yet again.

        Well that escalated quickly!

You’ve made a lot of assumptions there tiger, you might want to reign it in a bit and take a deep breath.

Then you might be able to come up with an actual argument.

Pete, the trolls that appear on these pages, from time to time, are not capable of developing a reasoned argument to support their point of view.. They prefer to vent their unreasoning anger on the person that offers an opinion on current affairs.

Instead of saying “I don’t agree, because I believe in X, Y or Z” they merely attack the person who made the original comment. I note that you are well capable of dealing with these uneducated buffoons but I think you will wait in vain for a solid counter argument.

Gwent Police can’t deal with problems in Gwent, they’re certainly not going be able to deal with a terrorist attack.

I note, Paul, that because you believe, with reasonable grounds, that police are unable to deal with a terrorist attack because they can’t deal with lower levels of crime you are considered by an anonymous commentator as paranoid and insane. Along with a wish that the police would deal with you!

Well as far as I’m concerned keep your comments coming, I agree with most and disagree with a few but I do like to hear the views of real people in this borough which count far more, to me, than the witterings of the trolls.

My concerns are born out of a real indecent where I witnessed total incompetence by Gwent police – a close friend of mine had their mobile phone stolen, the phone was then used to make calls to Afghanistan and Iraq, my friend managed to track the phone to an address which was displaying an upturned American flag in the window ( as the thief had used it’s sat nav facility ) this information was given to Gwent Police including the phone numbers that were called – the Police were not interested in the slightest and did nothing, they also said that they did not have the ability to track a phone number outside of the country. Gwent Police do not have the intelligence to crack The Sun’s Sudoko puzzle let alone thwart a terror attack…..sadly the phone was never recovered, no I’m not paranoid why would a terrorist organisation want to inflict pain and suffering on the good people of Wales, Carwyn Jones is doing it for them.

The candle vigil is then used to bring a close to the problem.
      Unfortunately the problem still persists.

My view is that Caerffili, Ystrad Mynach, Llanbradach etc shoud be policed by the South Wales force. My reasoning is that Gwent Police are, quite naturally, focussed on Gwent and not on Glamorgan communities.

Police have always policed the areas that correspond to council ward areas within their Force Area – but I do not believe this necessarily provides the best policing – I like you, feel we should be covered by South Wales Police and believe that we would get a much better service.
Gwent Police seem to be relying far too heavily on Response Policing ( responding to incidents in progress or that have recently occurred ).
The deterrent factor of regular, visible patrols seems to have been dismissed.
Any honest bobby will admit that a lot of good Police work comes from community intelligence and a lot of luck.
Many a bobby has turned a street corner and just happened to come across an incident……..

The only way to change this is to change the mind of the Police and Crime Commissioner, Jeff Cuthbert. I requested, in Town Council, that he be invited to our monthly meeting. This was agreed and an invitation sent which he accepted.

We then had the Town Clerk reply and suggested either the February or March meeting. He did not show at either meeting.

It just reinforces that the Police & Crime Commissioner appears to have a set agenda for Policing and appears to not want to be put under scrutiny.

South Wales Police are much more proactive and visible

I’ll second that Jack, unfortunately I’ve had the misfortune of having to call upon them, I wish I hadn’t bothered, an utter waste of time.
