Caerphilly MP: “Democracy will not be undermined”

News | | Published: 09:57, Tuesday April 4th, 2017.

Caerphilly MP Wayne David has said democracy will not be undermined in the wake of the London terrorist attack which left three innocent people and a police officer dead.

The Labour politician was in the House of Commons at the time of the attack on Wednesday, March 22, and was one of the MPs who spent nearly five hours in the Commons Chamber when Parliament was locked down.

Mr David said: “I pay tribute to the police officer who lost his life defending Parliament and to the people who helped those who had been injured by the attacker.

“Cross party, Parliament is resolute that democracy and freedom will not be undermined by this outrage.”

Islamic extremist Khalid Masood, 52, killed three people when he drove a car into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge
He then fatally stabbed police officer Keith Palmer before being shot dead.

Police believe he drove at speeds of up to 76mph across the bridge. His attack lasted just 82 seconds.

The Islamic State group has said it was behind the attack, although authorities claim there is no evidence linking Masood with the group.

Speaking the day after the attack, Gwent Police’s Chief Constable Jeff Farrar paid tribute to PC Palmer and also issued a message of reassurance to residents, stating patrols by uniformed officers will be stepped up in the coming weeks.
He said: “Police officers are just ordinary people.

“Ordinary people, doing extraordinary things, just as PC Keith Palmer has shown.

“We step forward to protect the public, when others step back. That is our job. However, incidents like those we saw yesterday in London, undoubtedly give us all an opportunity to reflect.”

He added: “Whilst there is no information to suggest that anything similar will happen in Gwent, please remember that the threat level, nationally, remains at ‘Severe’.

“If you notice anything that you consider unusual in your neighbourhood, no matter how small, please let us know by calling us on 101, or 999 if it is an emergency.”
