Rugby Union: Profligacy costs Bargoed dear in defeat

Sport | | Published: 16:00, Thursday April 13th, 2017.

Llanelli 52-7 Bargoed
Sunday April 9, Llanelli

For much of the first half-hour or so, Bargoed were in control of this Principality Premiership Tier Two tie, but crucially failed to convert territory and possession into points.

Frustratingly for the away supporters, the opportunities were created, but a strong Llanelli defence held firm.

Bargoed’s profligacy would come back to haunt them – after a missed penalty attempt, a score held up short, and a marginal touch call – as Llanelli scored four tries in ten minutes.

Steffan Hughes, winger Tom Rodgers, No.8 Jack Condy and full-back Kallum Evans all got on the scoresheet, as Llanelli went into the break 26-0 up and with the try bonus-point.

Condy got his second from a catch-and-drive shortly after the restart, and winger Ashley Evans went over from a cross-field kick to make it 40-0 with Hughes’ extras.

Llanelli second-row Chris Long had ten minutes in the bin for taking out a lineout jumper in the air, but Bargoed couldn’t take advantage.

Tries for flanker Lloyd Pike and a second for Rodgers made it 52-0, before Bryce Morgan crossed for Bargoed four minutes from time with full-back James Hallett converting the consolation to end the game 52-7.
