Woman found in Mornington Meadows was the victim of a serious sexual assault, police confirm

News | | Published: 14:50, Friday June 9th, 2017.

A woman found in a “distressed” state in the Mornington Meadows area of Caerphilly was the victim of a serious sexual assault, Gwent Police has finally confirmed – almost three weeks since the attack.

The attack happened between 11pm on Friday, May 19 and 1am on Saturday, May 20.

Gwent Police said it received reports of a distressed woman in the Mornington Meadows area, specifically the Dol Fran and Pen-Y-Cae streets.

The victim is described by police as white, around 30-years-old with long straight brown hair. She was wearing a black top, pink skirt, black leggings and black boots.

She was carrying a large black leatherette bag, the size of a holdall with a metal and leather shoulder strap. The bag contained her keys, with a fob, and her black leather purse containing cash and her driving licence.

The holdall and its contents, together with the pink miniskirt, black cardigan and a black bra are missing.

According to residents, officers searched bins and undergrowth on the Saturday morning for clothing and other possessions missing from the woman.

Police would now like to speak to a driver of a red car spotted in the area at the time.

Residents living in the area have previously expressed concern the attack may have been a sexual assault.

Despite repeated requests from Caerphilly Observer, Gwent Police had until today refused to confirm the exact nature of the inquiry.

Gwent Police was asked to comment over the delay in releasing this information – including the appeal regarding the driver of the red car, which was not in the original appeal issued last month.

A spokeswoman said: “There were operational reasons as to why this could not be confirmed earlier. I am unable to confirm any further information about the reasons behind this, as it is part of the ongoing investigation.”

Anyone with information, or who may have seen something unusual at the time of the attack, can call Gwent Police on 101, quoting log 39 20/5/17.
