Thousands of runners will descend upon Caerphilly town on Sunday June 18 for this year’s 10k road race.

Now in its fifth year and sponsored by Bryn Meadows Hotel and Spa, the race is set to start at 10am, although road closures will be in place before then

This year, the 10k and 2k races will be started by former Wales rugby star Gavin Henson, who will be plying his trade at Newport Gwent Dragons next season.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is advising residents that a number of roads will operate either a full or part closure from 7am to around 1pm, including:

• The start/finish line is located on Crescent Road, which will be partially closed from Nantgarw Road to the junction with Heol Trecastell estate from 6am, and will be fully closed between 9am and 1pm.

• Cardiff Road through the town centre will be closed between 9am and midday, and the road leading from the Bedwas Bridge roundabout to Van Road will be fully closed between 9.30am and midday. while Piccadilly Square will be fully closed from 9am until 10.15am.

• Pontygwindy Road will be closed between 9.30am and 10.45am, and the road between the Pwll-y-Pant roundabout and Bedwas Bridge roundabout will be closed to eastbound-only traffic from 9am until 11.30am.

• Residents of Lansbury Park and Mornington Meadows will be able to access their estates throughout the day.

The council is also warning of changes to bus routes and where some services will stop in the town. For more information call 01495 235223.

Residents of Van Road and Pontygwindy Road have been requested to find alternative parking arrangements due to restrictions, and the car parks at Twyn Primary School and the Y Gwyndy campus – the former St Ilan site – will be available.

Another event in our town to cause choas, I think we should have some events but we are having so many at the moment its crazy. How can our police deal with all these events? The council are finding difficult at the moment to deal with such events. Maybe we should cut events instead of services

And lets not forget all the disruption we suffer with the inevitable road closures that most of these events bring.

I will be joining my fellow townsfolk in supporting all the young people taking part in the 2K race. It will be great to see all those children enjoying running in our great town. I hope to join in with fellow residents and visitors for the 10k. It will be a nice day hopefully and everyone will enjoy.

Good luck to you Jeff, I am not criticising you or the event. I just feel we need less of these types of events in this time of cut backs. I hope you raise lot of money

How very sad to have attitudes like Edward and John. People will be raising thousands of pounds for good causes and charities, with the shocking recent events in the UK, it’s so nice to have something to enjoy and recognise the positive things in the community.

I agree, the road closures will be 2-3 hours in total on a quiet Sunday morning. Me and my daughter are looking forward to it!
