A popular and prominent Caerphilly man and his wife recently celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.
Tudor and Margaret Jones were joined by friends and family to mark 60 years of marriage at the New House Country Hotel in Thornhill on Thursday June 1.
The couple wed on June 1 1957 at the Pantygwydr Baptist Church in their hometown of Swansea before moving to Caerphilly in 1966 when Mr Jones was appointed as an engineer for the Wales Gas Board’s Rhymney and Aber arm.
Mr Jones was invested as an MBE before his retirement in 1993, and also contributed scripts for the likes of The Two Ronnies, Max Boyce and Les Dawson. He has since founded both the Caerphilly Round Table and Tommy Cooper Society – whose work to donate defibrillators to public venues has been recognised across Caerphilly County Borough. The society was also responsible for the fundraising to erect a statue of Tommy Cooper in the town.
Margaret was a founding member of Caerphilly Ladies’ Circle, and contributed to the musical life of South Wales as a soprano soloist, and as a member of the Prince of Wales Investiture Choir and the BBC Chorus.
Tudor, 83, said of the couple’s anniversary: “I’m surprised that it’s here already. It only seems like yesterday that we were getting married.
“It was a great family day with very happy memories. It’s all seemed so natural, there’s no real secret to it.
“Although we got married in Swansea, we are well and truly Caerphilly-ites now.”
The pair celebrated their anniversary with former colleagues, family, and friends from right across the country.
Tudor added: “It all went very well, it was great to see people we haven’t seen in several years again.”
