A 15-year-old boy from the Rhymney area has been arrested in connection with an arson attack which caused around £35,000 worth of damage.

Emergency services were called to a fire at Ystrad Mynach Park at around 9.45pm on Thursday, June 29.

The deliberate fire caused extensive damage to a climbing frame and other play facilities in the park – with an estimated cost of £35,000.

A £1,000 reward has been offered for information about the fire which leads to a prosecution.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said: “At the end of June, we appealed for information regarding a fire that caused damage to a children’s play area in Ystrad Mynach.

“On Thursday, July 20, we arrested a 15-year-old boy from Rhymney on suspicion of arson. He has been released under investigation.”
