Rugby legend pays tribute to Megaday event which has raised over £300,000 for cancer charity

News | | Published: 14:47, Thursday August 24th, 2017.

Welsh rugby legend Jonathan Davies OBE has sent his best wishes ahead of the 23rd annual Megaday.

The event has raised more than £300,000 for Velindre Cancer Centre since 1995, and former Wales fly-half Davies, who is Velindre’s fundraising president, posted a Facebook message thanking everyone involved with Megaday.

Known as ‘Jiffy’, he said: “I’d like to say thank you to everyone involved and who has contributed and supported Megaday for the last 23 years.

“It’s amazing and we can’t thank you enough.”

The 23rd Megaday will have something for everyone at Caerphilly Rugby Club over the August bank holiday weekend.

The festival will begin inside the huge marquee on the Saturday with ‘Megaday 100 voices sing the Musicals’.

The event will continue on Sunday with nine live bands.

The festival has raised more than £300,000 for Velindre Cancer Centre since 1995 and is held in memory of two local musicians.

Andrew Nichols and Paul Grahame sadly both lost their lives to cancer.

Until his death in 2001, Paul had played at every Megaday with his band PG and the Tips and also played a major role in organising the festival.

Megaday opens on Saturday with ‘Megaday 100 voices sing the Musicals’ performing songs from Les Miserables, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Dreamgirls, Grease, Hairspray and lots more from famous West End shows.

The 100 voices will be made up from members of Cwm Male Voice Choir, Caerphilly Youth Theatre, New Horizons Youth Theatre plus various soloists including Cheryl Roberts, West End star Lee David Bowen, plus many more.

On Sunday there will be nine live bands including headliners Neon Ballroom and the ever popular 4th Street plus Best Served Chilled, Cancel the Transmission, Guardians of Public Morality, The Love Handles, Mr Hate, Tab80 and The Strip Lights.

The weekend will finish with an explosive fireworks display on Sunday at 10.30pm.

Megaday organiser Peter Hopkins said: “It’s going to be a great weekend, people will have the opportunity to remember lost loved ones, have a great time and support Megaday in reaching our next target of £325,000 raised for Velindre Cancer Centre.

“Megaday relies on the support of the local community, businesses, performers and volunteers and we thank you once again for your continued support.”
